Discover Your Best Vein Treatment Options

If you have been researching vein treatment options, you’ve most likely discovered that finding the best vein treatment for your individual condition can be quite overwhelming. Fortunately, new advances in vein treatments make them more popular, less invasive, and easier to recover from than ever. The experienced team at Vein Specialists will provide you with the latest and most effective technology for the accurate diagnosis of your vein disease and an easy-to-understand review of your vein treatment options. They will offer their best recommendations for your specific situation.

You’ve taken an important step by visiting this page. It is important to weigh the risk of leaving venous disease untreated versus obtaining a thorough evaluation, diagnosis, and successful vein treatment. The earlier you pursue a treatment option, the sooner we can help relieve and reverse your painful symptoms or signs of vein disease such as varicose veins, leg swelling, skin discoloration or leg ulcers.

First – Understand the Types of Venous Disease

Venous disease is broken up into three separate, but related categories which aids in determining the vein treatment option that’s right for you:

1. Venous Insufficiency (VI)

Venous insufficiency shows up in different ways, all of which may benefit from vein treatment. These may include external physical signs such as spider veins and varicose veins, although several other signs or symptoms may include the following:

  • Leg Swelling
  • Skin Discoloration and Thickening/Inflammation
  • Bleeding from Varicose Veins and Leg Ulcers
  • Restless Legs and or Leg Cramps
  • Frequent Nighttime Urination

Venous insufficiency occurs when the veins have trouble sending blood from the legs back to the heart. This increased pressure in the leg veins causes the veins to get bigger and more visible. Several vein treatment options are available to treat venous insufficiency before it evolves into something more serious such as lipodermatosclerosis or {stasis dermatitis} an inflammatory skin condition, due to leaky veins, that can cause recurring skin infections. This can also lead to venous ulcerations, which can be very dangerous.

You may already have venous ulcerations if you notice a small tear or simple wound not healing, festering for months, or gradually growing larger. That’s why it’s so important to establish the underlying cause of these wounds to treat them effectively.

2. Venous Thromboembolic Disease (VTE)

A condition in which a blood clot forms in a vein, venous thromboembolic disease includes both deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). DVT typically occurs when a blood clot forms within a deep vein in the body (typically in the legs). PE is the result of a piece of DVT breaking loose and traveling into the lungs, which can be fatal. Risk factors for VTE include both venous insufficiency and iliac vein compression syndrome.

The risk of leaving vein disease untreated can lead to more serious health conditions.

3. Iliac Venous Compression Syndrome (IVCS)

A common cause of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), iliac venous compression syndrome occurs when the right iliac artery compresses the left common iliac vein in the pelvic region, resulting in a reduction in the venous outflow. These blockages in the pelvic veins cause blood to back up and pool in the legs which can lead to the various signs and symptoms of venous disease, as well as DVT, VTE, and pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS).

How to Determine Your Best Vein Treatment Options

As you can see, venous disease can present itself in a variety of different ways. Some of the most common physical signs are spider veins and varicose veins. By scheduling an appointment with Vein Specialists, we can evaluate you to determine the underlying cause and the most effective vein treatment option for you.

Now you’re getting a sense of why seeing a vein specialist is so important, even if you think your issue is merely cosmetic. Successful treatment is based on understanding the underlying cause.

As a new patient, you will undergo a new patient consult. Most patients will be scheduled for an ultrasound evaluation of your lower extremity venous system. This easy, pain-free advanced ultrasound will enable our vascular sonographers to examine your leg veins to determine which veins are working properly. After the ultrasound, we will schedule your follow up appointment to discuss your test results and outline possible vein treatment options moving forward.

At Vein Specialists, we offer the following minimally invasive and highly effective leg vein treatment procedures depending on your specific vein care needs:

  • Endovenous Ablation: One of the most common procedures for leg vein treatment, endovenous ablation uses heat in the form of either LASER energy or radio frequency energy to treat the underlying cause of varicose veins. Benefits include no incisions, minimal or no pain, and minimal scarring. Recovery is almost immediate with return to normal activity.
  • Microphlebectomy: The most common procedure for treating varicose veins, microphlebectomy involves the removal of veins through very small incisions. A popular outpatient procedure, it is often performed in conjunction with endovenous ablation.
  • VenaSeal™ Vein Treatment: A minimally invasive procedure, VenaSeal™ uses a specially formulated medical adhesive to close diseased veins and reroute blood to healthy veins. VenaSeal™ also features an extremely fast recovery time with immediate return to normal activity.
  • Injection Sclerotherapy: An ideal treatment for small varicose veins and spider veins, injection sclerotherapy is a noninvasive and very effective outpatient procedure, where an FDA approved substance is injected directly into the abnormal veins through small needles, eventually resulting in disappearance. Benefits include minimal discomfort and the healing of diseased veins in a shorter period.
  • Varithena: Is a premixed polidocanol foam which is injected under ultrasound guidance into residual leaky veins that may not have been able to be treated with Endovenous Ablation due to the location of the vein.
  • VeinGogh: A safe and effective way to treat facial and nasal spider veins and small cherry angiomas, the VeinGogh procedure offers less discomfort for local sensitive areas than previous spider vein therapies.

Note that, depending on your condition, your insurance may require an initial treatment trial of compression hose therapy before you consider any of the above vein procedures. Compression therapy involves wearing medical-grade stockings that apply a specific amount of pressure to your legs and ankles. This promotes proper blood flow and thereby reduces swelling and symptoms of fatigue and achiness.
